RE: Winter concerns...Black water tank

Sanidumps.com has a FAQ on RV antifreeze Can I always rely on RV antifreeze to keep my tanks from freezing up?
I would first check by looking down your toilet to see if you can see anything (some people have put a pole down to test), if it's dry I would then go with a pail under the drain valve and quickly open then close the valve. If you do have something in the tank, find the nearest dump location from Sanidumps.com.
Sanidumps.com had a poll question on the web site asking how your sensors worked, only 25% said all the time.

RE: National Park Campground

There's a new eBook listing over 8,000 RV dump locations in USA.
Includes pricing and GPS coordinates for dumping your tanks.
You may notice that it is cheaper to dump in the western states than the eastern states!

RE: Dump site directory?

Sanidumps.com lists over 12,000 RV dump locations.
RVdumps.com lists about 2,000 locations.
Sanidumps.com does about 1,000 updates/additions/changes each month.
If you know of locations missing or corrections, submit an update so that the web site can be updated for everyone.
To my knowledge there isn't a more complete listing than Sanidumps.com

RE: I-5 Dump Station Needed - S from San Fran

here is a handy website:
http://www.sanidumps.com/
Thanks. I started there, but it was fairly limited. The suggestions here appear to be way more helpful. Thanks!
The www.sanidumps.com web site has the largest listing of dump locations on the internet (12,000+).
Here's a link to the Califorina page with over 900 locations for dumping your tanks.
You may also want to look at the map of dump locations form on each state page.

RE: Cleaning gray tank sensors - How?

There are sensors that are taped to the outside, benefit is that they never get gummed up, con is that they are expensive.
Most sensors are four screws through the tank wall.
Lowest cost is using the ice cube trick, you may have to do it more than once.
Remember to always empty your tanks when they are 2/3 to full, emptying tanks at the 1/3 level often will cause problems. Or if you want problems, leave your tank values open at the campground and build a tepee in the tank!
If tanks are not 2/3 full when it's time to empty, add water until 2/3 or more full, then empty.

RE: Inverters .. do you have one? .. are they worth the cost?

Brian hit the nail on the head. What is your intended usage?
Everyone has different needs = different solutions!
For us: 2800 watt true sine wave inverter/charger/auto transfer switch all in one.
It's simple to use, simple to install.
Batteries will be your next question, how many, what type, what budget!

RE: Thinking of fulltime RVing to stretch retirement funds

Fezz,
You may want to search Google for "rv lifestyle seminar"
There's several places where you can attend these seminars and you will learn a lot. The cost is not much for the seminar.

RE: Hopefully not too stupid Canada question?

I would take some cash, ie for coffee etc. but most of the time when I'm cross the border I will use the credit card.
Some CC like to have advance warning if you plan to make large purchases (part of their security system), so let them know before you go.

RE: Anchorage to Calgary in 6 nights

I did a quick plan of your trip with MS Streets & Trips 2008. You will have a full 6 days of traveling.
Here's the stops recommended (for the night):
1) Dawson, Yukon
2) Whitehorse, Yukon
3) Muncho Lake, BC or drive longer to Fort Nelseon, BC
4) Dawson Creek, BC
5) Saskatchewan Crossing, AB

RE: Toilet Papers

Use the jar and water test but do not add a lot of water (ie your holding tank doen't get a lot of water with each use).
I would recommend for the test 1 cup of water and two sheets of TP in each jar for the test.
I have seen 2 ply and 3 ply TP break down better than RV brand TP and I have seen 1 ply that hasn't broken down well at all.
